Inez & Vinoodh were born in 1963 and 1961, respectively, in The Netherlands. They met while studying art and photography at the Art Academy in Amsterdam. In the late 1980s, they began to work together and soon discovered they share the same vision: ‘experimenting with the latest digital imaging technologies’, which resulted ‘in a sophisticated interplay of elegance and horror’. ‘We met [initially] when we were in art school, but in 1986 Vinoodh had graduated already and started his own line as a fashion designer. He was about to have his first fashion show, and asked me to take pictures of the clothes. That’s how we realized that we had exactly the same ideas about images, fashion, beauty, about everything we could even think of’, says Inez. Theirs is also a story of love. ‘ “We knew the first time we met,” said van Lamsweerde while eying Matadin from across the table in their downtown New York studio. “We each had a different partner, so it just wasn’t possible. But we worked together on and off for six years without dating,” she continued. “And then we met on the street in Amsterdam, went for a coffee, and it all sort of clicked.” Since then, they got married and have a 10 year old son named Charles. We’re surely hear more from this prolific couple, as besides their latest exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills which just ended, they also just launched a jewellery line with TenThousandThings’ David Rees and Ron Anderson and a Taschen book, Pretty Much Everything, among many others. We promise to keep you updated with the endeavours of this prolific couple that always manages to mesmerise us with their work. Until then, we hope you’ll enjoy our photo gallery with our selection of some of their amazing work.
