Tommy Ton is a Canadian photographer who started the famous and inspirational street style blog, Jak And Jill. He spends his time in between New York, Milan, Paris and London, shooting everyone that exudes a sense of style, with focus on one of his favourite subjects, the fashion editors: Emmanuelle Alt, Carine Roitfeld, Anna Dello Russo, Giovanna Battaglia, Taylor Tomasi-Hill or Kate Lanphear. He realised that they were the new fashion icons, the ones that shaped and popularised new fashion trends. ‘Whereas in the past, the icons of the industry were models and designers, today editors are the new fashion icons.’
His love for fashion started at the age of 13 and continued ever since with great passion and discipline. ‘It all started with a Tom Ford Gucci collection. When I saw that collection and heard the way he spoke about it I knew I needed to immerse myself in that world. It was spring 1997 and it was a heroin chic collection.’ He has since learnt every outfit of every major collection, worn by which model and when.
Once the Jak&Jill took off, the site became incredibly popular, which immediately gained the attention of designers and fashion magazines. He then started collaborating with some of the many big names out there: Sergio Rossi, L’Oréal, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lane Crawford and also The Japanese Vogue and French Vogue. In 2009, after Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist has left style.com, he was invited to take his place, which he accepted gladly: ‘Being on style.com is like being in the bible’.
Since the very beginning he tried to distinguish his work from the other street photographers, by concentrating on the details. He is known for not doing much photography retouching and always relying on the light. ‘According to Mark Holgate, the fashion news director at American Vogue, what sets Ton apart from the other bloggers is that ‘he instinctively understands what makes the way someone got dressed that morning interesting and arresting and worth recording. And he frames and fetishises the look brilliantly too. I love the way he can capture all the subtle nuances of an outfit in a second.’
